BKPNY is pleased to have Tahimik Sa Tundo Reading Center, as one of its library partners. Aside from providing them with donated books, a Concentrated Learning Enhancement (CLE) workshop was held for Executive Director Joyce Alcoreza, her staff and parent volunteers, on July 18, 2009, thanks to the work of BKP Philippines volunteers.
We intend to continue to support Tahimik Sa Tundo with a supply of books as they extend their reach to other needy areas in the country.
More about Tahimik Sa Tundo
In an effort to promote reading and thereby help improve functional literacy among Filipinos, the Ricardo L. Alcoreza Memorial Foundation, Inc. set up the “Tahimik sa Tundo Reading Corner” in Tahimik Street, very close to the Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Hospital in Delpan Road. The place is thick with children and is within walking distance to at least six primary schools. About a thousand children, between seven and twelve years old, have access to the center.
The pillars of the project are love of reading, care of the environment, and appreciation of finer things in life. Thus, activities in the reading center work around developing good reading habits, instilling environmental awareness, and introducing children to various forms of art.
Weekend storytelling, lectures, and art activities are regularly run. A year-round program includes thematic reading library collection profile and thus is kept relevant to its users.
The Center's ultimate aim, is not just to impart the joy of reading, but to imbibe in Tondo children a sense of hope and an appreciation of their dignity as human beings. |
